Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and refers to giving a small portion of one's income to charity. Muslims donate 2.5 percent of their wealth once a year to help the poor and needy, called zakat, an Arab term meaning “that which purifies.” Most donations are given in the month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The added benefit of increasing acts of good-will in Ramadan is incentivized by the blessings Muslims seek in reward. Increasing numbers of donations are made during the week of Hajj, and before the end of the year in December as well.
